How do I convert to MP3 files? PDF Print E-mail

Q: I have many courses recorded on CD that I want to convert to MP3 format for my iPod.

A: If you still have access to a Windows PC then I'm pretty certain that dbPowerAmp Music Convertor will do this for you - I just checked that there is an aiff codec available.

Won't iTunes also do it? let the CD import, then select a bunch of tracks and right-click 'Convert to AAC'. Might not be completely optimised but will be much smaller than the aiff versions.

Q: when I type I get lots of numbers and random letters and digits, instead
of the letters I select.

A: Looks like you are using a laptop and have the NumLock key on (or maybe
fn+NumLock) so that you are typing 4 5 6 in place of u i o . . .

Webhosting recommendations PDF Print E-mail

Q: My hosting package is up for renewal and I’m looking for something a bit more reliable – any recommendations?

A: I've used Dreamhost for my own sites for five years now and am happy to continue with them. Reliability is good (not perfect) and they let you know of the problems they know about! Plenty of on-line help and a responsive and sensible help desk. Pricing is low to middle, excellent value for money.

I've used maybe a dozen other isps whilst trouble shooting for clients and haven't yet seen anything that tempts me to change.

How do I re-size pictures? PDF Print E-mail

Q: Picture resizing software. Can anyone recommend a package?

A: It really does depend what you want to do with your images. A bit more detail would help give you a better answer.

My current preference is for FastStone Image Viewer which has replaced IrfanView as my image tool of choice. They also have a simpler Photo Resizer which may be the right tool for you. Both are free for personal and educational use ($35/$20 respectively for a commercial license).

The free Google Picasa is an excellent image manager that will let you crop, re-size and adjust the image quality with a simple easy to use interface. But it's really intended to be used to manage all of your images.

The Swiss army knife of free image tools is IrfanView - it can handle just about any kind of image and pretty much any manipulation - but it's not always obvious to learn.

If you just want to do a few images then surprisingly Microsoft Word doesn't do a bad job. You can use the crop and resize tools on the image toolbar; compress the images to make the change permanent then save the doc as html to re-extract them.

Going a little more sophisticated Paint.Net is a free fairly full-featured image editor for Windows with the .Net framework. Some features I don't like but I do use it for cropping and re-sizing.

For completeness - the ultimate in free image software is The Gimp which is getting closer to PhotoShop functionality and is almost certainly overkill for your needs.

Going in the other direction, if you need thumbnails then Fookes software Easy Thumbnails is free. (Fookes also have Easy Imager for $35 which I haven't used though Eric's products are usually practical and very good.)

Again for completeness, if you need to process batches of images then ReaConverter Pro is excellent - $40 for the Lite edition, $99 for the Pro version.

I hope this helps.
