Q: How do I get the accent into my name? My name is Roisin, it should be pronounced 'Rozheen', I think it needs an acute accent on the 's' to show this.
A: The spelling with an 's acute' didn't ring quite true so I went digging a little - I hope this
will help you!
As far as I can make out Róisín is the Irish word for Rose (possibly
'little rose'). In old Irish it was spelt with an s with a dot above it (not an
acute accent), in modern Irish this is usually replaced by 'sh'. Hence you'll
find the spelling Roishin is occasionally used (but gets 1,650 Google hits as
opposed to 5 million for Roisin/Róisín). See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E1%B9%A0
If you
want to use the s+dot version then you can use the character provided that you
have a Unicode font installed on your computer. The characters are Unicode 1E60
for the capital letter and 1E61 for the small s - to type them in Word type the
code then Alt+x
Most fonts won't contain the characters but Unicode fonts are
becoming more common - there's a list at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unicode_typefaces which includes several that are included with Windows or Windows
Office. But there's a downside, Word documents contain the font names but not
the fonts so you can't be sure that the recipient will have the same fonts
installed and these special characters will show up as a little dot or box if
they don't. PDFs will work if font embedding is turned
on!
Here
are a couple of samples in Tahoma - they look OK here (see the image attached)
don't know if they will reach you or not!
1E61 alt+x = ṡ
1E60 alt+x = Ṡ

Q: I've noticed recently that a lot of pages I browse to have Skype icons where there are phone numbers. Where have these suddenly come from?
A: When you install or upgrade Skype one of the options is to
let Skype install a browser add-on that does this. Sometimes it's useful
sometimes it messes up the site. I uninstalled it after a couple of weeks. I
Googled and found several sets of instructions for removing it One clear set for
IE is at http://tinyurl.com/2493j8 - it also shows
you the plugin at work and says how it is installed.
Best wishes

Q: Could anyone advice me on the best place to purchase barcodes for CD sales in the UK.
A: If these are spoken word CDs then you need an ISBN barcode. UK ISBNs are available from Nielsen http://www.isbn.nielsenbookdata.co.uk/ We applied last year and it's a fairly easy process. I think our block of 10 cost around £100.
Music CDs don't require an ISBN but some stockist may want a UPC to manage stock control - don't know much about these but there is some info at http://www.gs1uk.org/about/Implementation_Guide.asp#1

You can use the basic .pdf security to add an 'open' password to a pdf as well as protecting against copying or printing (with a second different password). Both of these are rightly considered 'basic' protection as they can be broken very simply if you have the correct software - which is readily available, though probably not in most schools' kitbags. A better simpler protection method is to use a copy protection password and to watermark the pages of your pdf with a customer unique message: "The PDF specially prepared for Barnsley Middle School" on every page. This is much more of a practical deterrent. You can add this kind of message with most of the PDF tools. If you combine it with a little graphic then it becomes practically impossible to remove without tediously editing every page of the pdf.
